What is the likelihood you have heard of John Horse, and the Black Seminoles? The first rebels to beat American Slavery? Chances are very low because it seems U.S History is always separated into Native American History, and Black Slavery History, but what happened with The Black Seminoles, and Native Americans is quite a beautiful one.
Through the warrior Osceola and John Horse, Revolution was redeemed. A mixed society in the Everglades (Currently Florida) emerged. Inhabited predominately by runaway slaves and the Seminoles. It was in fact, the FIRST legally free Black sanctioned town was in The Everglades. They achieved this freedom with the promise of the Spanish Crown. They offered freedom if they would defend the land for the crown, the Spanish. Honor and respect to John Horse and Osceola.
NOT everyone stayed with the oppression of the White Slave Masters. Of course, they were met with resistance, because the structure of white supremacy was built to really chain anyone who isn’t white. 1818, under James Monroe’s Administration, General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida, (Unauthorized of course) and he claimed it for the United States. Killed anyone who disagreed, and ultimately seized the lands that were had Black Seminoles.
